About bariatric surgery
In the case where a person’s body mass index (BMI) is close to 34, which aligns within the overweight category, and is increasing, and if other methods of weight loss have failed, bariatric surgery is a viable option. This surgery provides a number of advantages, like or example in the case of type 2 diabetes, mellitus and high blood pressure.
Apart from losing unwanted weight, it also simplifies and eases the regulation of both blood pressure and sugar levels within a normal range.
The doctor individually evaluates the need for surgery for each patient.
When is bariatric surgery recommended?
Body mass index or BMI is one of the most popular indicators to measure the level, or in some cases, severity of obesity. Using the BMI scale, the ratio of body weight to height is taken into account. It is obtained by dividing body weight (in kilograms) by the square of the person’s height (in meters). For example, a woman who is 1.75 m in height and 60 kg in weight will have a BMI of:
60 / (1,75)2 = 19,59.
BMI calculation formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)2
According to the accepted guidelines, it is considered that BMI of 18.5 to 24.99 indicates normal body weight. If BMI is higher, it is classified as overweight, to obese. To be eligible for bariatric surgery, a patient must have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 34 and higher.
Body mass index calculator
BMI (kg/m2) | |
Underweight | BMI < 18,5 |
Normal body weight | BMI = 18,5 – 24,99 |
Excess weight | BMI = 25 – 29,99 |
Obesity | BMI > 30 |
